What is the ACT?

The ACT (American College Testing) is a standardized test used for college admissions in the United States. It is designed to assess a student’s readiness for college by measuring their skills in English, math, reading, and science. The ACT also includes an optional writing section (essay). Like the SAT, it is used by colleges and universities to evaluate applicants.

Components of the ACT Exam

  • The ACT consists of four mandatory sections and one optional section:

    1. English: This section tests grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, and rhetorical skills. It involves reading passages and answering questions based on them.
    2. Mathematics: This section covers topics such as algebra, geometry, and trigonometry. It includes both multiple-choice and grid-in questions.
    3. Reading: This section measures reading comprehension by asking questions based on several reading passages.
    4. Science: This section tests scientific reasoning and interpretation of data. It includes questions on biology, chemistry, physics, and Earth/space sciences.
    5. Writing (Optional): The essay section asks students to write a response based on a given prompt. The essay measures writing skills, including how well students organize and express their ideas.
